Musik rock jangan pernah menerima stigmatisasi “satan or devil worshipper” lagi. Karena rock, seperti genre musik lainnya, adalah pesan universal dari pikiran dan perasaan manusia. Musik menjadi medium kegelisahan dan kebahagiaan manusia, dan manusia mengolah keduanya dalam ramuan seni. Tak heran jika musik menjadi bagian dari kebutuhan manusia, tak terkecuali musik rock. Pertengahan tahun 50an, musik rock muncul. Bunyinya yang khas memiliki akar dari blues dan country, mengalami evolusi di akhir tahun 60-an dan awal 70-an, berbaur dalam folk, jazz dan musik klasik. tahun 70an, rock berkembang menjadi berbagai subgenre (sub-kategori) seperti soft rock, glam rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, dan punk rock. Sub kategori rock yang muncul ditahun 80an termasuk New Wave, hardcore punk dan alternative rock. Pada tahun 90an terdapat grunge, Britpop, indie rock dan nu metal.

Musik Blues awalnya tumbuh dari nyanyian spiritual, pujian yang pelan, semacam lantunan doa dalam sedu sedan, harapan, kegelisahan dan rintihan kecil budak-budak Afrika di tanah pertanian yang dingin di AS pada abad 19. Ia terdengar sebagai bentuk perlawanan pada suasana sepi, gelap dan kehampaan. Mereka bernyanyi tanpa musik, senandung yang haru dalam rindu yang ringkih akan alam kebebasan dan kebahagian. Tradisi nyanyian komunitas budak itu kemudian mengalami proses akulturasi dengan musik tradisional Eropa. Maka, musik Blues kelak tumbuh berkecambah jadi kekuatan musik yang mendominasi daerah pinggiran di bagian selatan Amerika, dan nama Blues akhirnya diresmikan tahun 1910. Nama Blues lahir dari istilah blue yang selalu dikonotasikan dengan perasaan depresi dan melankoli. Kemudian dunia pun terpesona akan lahirnya musik baru yang mampu memberi pengaruh yang sangat besar terhadap musik populer Amerika. Pengaruh itu menggeliat jelas dalam aliran ragtime, jazz, bluegrass, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, hip-hop, dan country, serta lagu-lagu pop konvensional.

Gempita Blues membahana penuh warna, terus berkembang. Permainan gitar pada musik blues, populer pada abad ke-20. Sebelumnya para musisi blues sering memakai banjo selama bertahun-tahun, dan musik blues pun terus berkembang. Bahkan di setiap daerah Amerika, melahirkan warna musik blues yang berbeda seperti Chicago Blues (Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor), Delta Blues (Robert Lockwood jr), East Cost Blues (John Jackson) dan Texas Blues (Mike Morgan & The Crawl). Perkembangan teknologi dalam instrumen musik, kemudian melahirkan warna baru seperti electric blues, electric harmonica blues, modern acoustic blues dan modern electric blues. Modern electric blues adalah subgenre blues yang paling populer hingga saat ini. Dari genre tersebut, lahir puluhan tokoh musik blues seperti B.B. King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hocker, Jhony Winter, Koko Taylor, Robert Cray, Taj Mahal, Dave Hole, Tinsley Ellis Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan dan Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
